When does a windscreen need replacing?
For optimal road safety, your vehicle’s windscreen should be clear and free from cracks or stone chips. Even the smallest damage will impair your ability to clearly see the road and weakens the glass, which can lead to shattering if left unfixed and reduces protection in the event of a crash. If your windscreen has a chip or crack over 10mm in the driver’s direct line of sight (Zone A), it will fail its MOT. Replacement may also be required under new national standards:
- Zone A (the 400mm-wide area in front of the driver): damage can only be repaired if 20mm or smaller
- Zone B (all other areas): damage can be repaired up to 40mm
- HGVs and coaches: cracks up to 150mm may be repaired in Zone B
- ADAS-affected areas (such as camera zones) must be replaced, not repaired
