A chipped windscreen can cause your vehicle to fail its MOT and should be repaired as soon as possible. It is quicker and more cost-effective to fix a chip than to let the damage worsen to needing a whole windscreen replacement.
A windscreen will fail its MOT if there is damage larger than 10mm in Zone A, the 400mm area directly in front of the driver (500mm for HGVs and coaches). Under new industry standards, repairs can only be carried out:
- · In Zone A, if the damage is 20mm or smaller
- In Zone B, if the damage is 40mm or smaller
Any damage affecting ADAS systems, such as camera areas, requires full windscreen replacement.
Repairing windscreen chips involves cleaning and drying the damaged area and filling it with a clear resin, which is then cured with a UV light to bond it to the glass. This reduces the visibility of the chip, making the windscreen smooth and reducing risk of further damage. The whole process takes around 30 minutes, meaning your vehicle can get back on the road within the hour.
